BEST BEGINNER RUCKING GEAR
You need three things to start rucking well: a pack that carries weight high and tight, a plate light enough to finish the walk, and socks that don't shred your heels. Everything else can wait.

What To Look For
Start at 10–20 lb, not 45
Most beginners quit because they loaded too heavy in week one. Start at roughly 10% of bodyweight and add a plate step only after four comfortable weeks.
Buy the pack before the plate
A pack with a dedicated plate pocket keeps the load off your lumbar spine. A gym backpack with a plate rolling around it is how people hurt their back.
Socks are the cheapest performance upgrade
Merino-blend boot socks cost less than a plate and prevent the blistering that ends most first months.
FAQ
How heavy should my first ruck be?
Around 10% of bodyweight — typically 10–20 lb. Distance first, weight later.
Do I need boots to start?
No. Trail runners or cushioned shoes you already own are fine for the first month.
